The Japanese government yesterday (Friday) executed seven people, including the leader of a religious group, for the 1995 sarin gas attack on the Japanese subway. In that attack in 1995, 13 people were killed and about 6 thousand people were injured.
According to media reports, the name of the leader of the religious group called 'Aum Shinrikyo' is Shoko Asahara. Asahara was a yoga teacher who was partially blind. He was preaching a kind of religious faith mixing Mahakal teachings with some beliefs of Buddhism and Hinduism. Many were members of that Aum Shinrikyo, including students from prominent universities in Japan.
In March 1995, there was a sarin gas attack on the Tokyo subway. Members of Aum Shinrikyo packed polythene bags filled with sarin and left them in subway compartments. After that, they escaped through the umbrella. 13 people were killed in that attack. And at least 6 thousand people were injured.
Asahara was first executed yesterday (Friday) morning for carrying out that attack. Then one by one the rest were hanged and executed. They have been executed in different jails.
In Japan, the news is usually made public after an execution. The country's Justice Minister Yoko Kamikawa read out the names of the seven people who were sentenced to death at a press conference on Friday. This time they have done 'very brutal' work, said the country's justice minister.
