A cancer-causing compound was found in soft drink Pepsi

A group of researchers from the Center for Environmental Health found that the chemical used by Pepsi to bring the popular caramel color to their soft drinks was using more than tolerable levels of harmful cancer-causing compounds in the human body.

Pepsi commonly uses 4-methylimidazole to bring caramel color. Studies have shown that the human body's tolerable level of this chemical is 29 micrograms per day, but Pepsi contains 4-methylimidazole about 5 times the tolerable level.

Meanwhile, Pepsi has said that they have reduced the use of this chemical in their soft drinks. Pepsi says they source 4-methylimidazole from 10 different states. Suppliers there have since changed their 4-methylimidazole processing.

Coca-Cola, another popular soft drink maker, says it does not use 4-methylimidazole to add caramel color to its drinks. They also say that the caramel color in their drink is completely safe for the human body.

Meanwhile, the Center for Environmental Health research team said they have not yet found any chemicals in Coca Cola that are harmful to the human body.
