The Dhaka Times Desk A female MP wears a headscarf to protest Austria's ban on the hijab and headscarf. Last Friday (May 17), the independent woman MP named Martha Bisman protested wearing a scarf when she got up to give a speech in Parliament.

The day before this, last Thursday, the Austrian government passed a bill banning headscarves for primary school girls in the country. Earlier, the country had also banned women from wearing hijab. After donning a hijab in Parliament in protest, Martha Bisman said, "We shouldn't put any barriers between us at all."
All members of the ruling center-right People's Party and the far-right Freedom Party voted in favor of the bill to ban headscarves in Austria's parliament.
But almost all members of the opposition voted against it. Previously, in May 2017, the Austrian government passed a law banning the burqa and niqab for Muslim women. After the burqa and niqab, Muslims have expressed frustration and anger as the scarf has been banned this time.
According to media reports, this action has been taken by directly targeting Muslims. Because the cap of the Jews and the turban of the Sikhs are kept outside the scope of this law. It should be noted that there are about 7 million Muslims living in Austria.
