The Dhaka Times Desk The UN has called on the international community to take swift action regarding the Rohingya genocide in Myanmar.

The United Nations Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, Yanghee Lee, said, "A lot of time has passed." Now the international community must act very quickly to impose sanctions on the Myanmar military and the military companies they control. Especially on the military directly controlled 'Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited (MEHL) and Myanmar Economic Cooperation (MEC).

Yanghee Lee said that they should be careful not to do business with any foreign company. The country's military is getting stronger because of business with foreign companies. They are basically using this power like Rohingya genocide. In a special article written in Al Jazeera last Tuesday, Yanghee Lee, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights, called for a ban. Younghee Lee said that Myanmar held general elections in 2015 after 6 decades of military rule. Through this, the National League for Democracy (NLD) of the country's leader Aung San Suu Kyi also got the opportunity to form the government.

The international community also supported Suu Kyi's government by lifting sanctions on its promise to return from military rule to democratic rule. However, democracy did not come under the leadership of Suu Kyi, but the situation became more and more complicated due to the political involvement of the army. In continuation of this, the Myanmar army carried out genocide against the Rohingyas in Rakhine. However, Suu Kyi did not spend a single word on behalf of Rohingya's human rights on this issue. Myanmar is moving towards another election in 2020.

In such a situation, the hope of returning to democracy has narrowed even more. During Suu Kyi's government, the human rights situation across the country has become more deplorable. Democratic freedom is gradually eroding. Thousands of lives are being destroyed in their armed conflict. Natural resources are also being looted. A stronger military than ever tightened its grip on politics and the economy. However, Suu Kyi's government has completely failed to take action against it. These actions by the government and the military have deeply disappointed Myanmar's human rights and democracy advocates.

Lee also said that senior army officers, including Army Chief Ming On Hlaing, are currently facing charges of anti-humanity and war crimes in the Rohingya genocide. Meanwhile, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has also approved the war crimes investigation. The United States and the European Union (EU) have already imposed several sanctions against military officials. But these measures are not enough at all. Myanmar Army has many businesses at home and abroad. They are still ongoing. Important sectors such as natural resource extraction, banking activities, tourism, transport, manufacturing and telecommunications are under the control of the Myanmar military. Army officers are also associated with many private companies through family and business ties. These companies are bringing various facilities due to their closeness with various state enterprises of Myanmar.
