Saturia Zamindar Bari is located in the birthplace of AKM Fazlul Haque, known as the Tiger of Bengal, in Rajapur Upazila, 21 km from Jhalkathi town in the southern district of Barisal. In the 17th century, Fazlul Haque's maternal grandfather Sheikh Shahabuddin established this zamindar house on 100 acres of land in Saturia. The zamindar house compound built in Mughal architecture consists of 3 buildings. The entrance to the compound has a beautifully carved main gate. Flower gardens, ponds and elaborate Mughal period buildings inside the main house add to the beauty of the house.

On October 26, 1873, Sherbangla AKM Fazlul Haque was born in this Saturia zamindar house. His institutional education started from the maktab of Saturia Zamindar's house. Most of his working and political life was spent in this zamindar house.

The historic Saturia Zamindar House stands as a witness to many brilliant events in history. Currently under the Bangladesh Directorate of Archaeology, some buildings including Sher Bangla Memorial Library have been constructed in this zamindar house.

how to go

Being a coastal and riverine region, the most convenient way to reach Jhalakathi is by sea. From Dhaka's Sadarghat, Sundarban 2, MV Farhan-7, TS Ostrich, TS Masud, TS Lepcha etc. launches and steamers can reach Rajapur Ghat. The fare for the launch from Dhaka to Rajapur will be from Tk 190 to Tk 1,600 depending on the category. By getting down at Rajapur Ghat, you can take any local transport to Saturia Zamindar House located near Bekutia Ferry Ghat on Rajapur-Pirojpur Highway.

By road, buses from Dhaka's Sayedabad or Gabtali reach Jhalkathi via BRTC, Hanif, Uttaran, Sugandha, Eagle or Sakura ferries. Then take CNG to Rajapur. From Rajapur you can easily go to Zamindar's house by rickshaw.

Rajapur Upazila has several hotels of average quality and Zilla Parishad Dak Bungalow under government management. But it is better for you to visit Saturia zamindar house for overnight stay and return to Jhalkathi from Rajapur in the evening. Dhansindi Rest House, Arafat Boarding, Halima Boarding, Dalian Hotel, Didar etc. are standard residential hotels in the district town.
