Children are at risk of the worst acute illness of the century

The Dhaka Times Desk The UN children's agency UNICEF has warned that an additional 3.9 million children in South Asia may suffer from acute illness due to the deadly coronavirus pandemic.

The organization gave this warning citing a study published in the famous medical journal Lancet. According to the Lancet study, at least 6.7 million children around the world will suffer from severe illness due to the socio-economic impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Half of these children are from South Asia.

Describing acute malnutrition as very dangerous, UNICEF also says that children will suffer because of extreme malnutrition. It makes children very sick and weak. Due to which the risk of death of children also increases, they also do not grow and develop properly.

According to UNICEF estimates, 4.7 million children suffered from acute illness in 2019 even before the Covid-19 pandemic. 1.7 million of them were in Bangladesh.

If urgent action is not taken, the number of children suffering from acute illness may rise to nearly 57 million this year. The United Nations children's agency also says that the number of children suffering from acute illness in the world may reach such a level; which has not been seen before in this century. UNICEF has also appealed for emergency funding of $240 million to address the problem. Source: BBC.
