Bangladesh is just after India in terms of 4G network coverage. However, Bangladesh is behind Nepal in terms of smartphone usage. Currently, 53 percent of people in Nepal are using smartphones. On the other hand, 41 percent of people in Bangladesh use smartphones.
On March 30, a report by GSMA, the global organization of mobile phone operators, revealed such a picture. Whereas high tax on smartphones has been shown as the reason behind Bangladesh's lagging behind.
The GSMA report also says that 69 percent of mobile phone users in India, 51 percent in Pakistan, 53 percent in Nepal and 60 percent in Sri Lanka own a smartphone. But 59 percent of people in Bangladesh are still using feature phones!
The number of mobile connections in Bangladesh is more than 17 crore. Out of which unique users are 54 percent. In case of unique user, even if a person has more than one SIM, he is counted as one.
The country is just behind India in terms of 4G network coverage. 47 percent of mobile phone users in Bangladesh use 2G, 25 percent use 3G and 28 percent use 4G. India is leading in the use of 3G and 4G. 68 percent of mobile phone users in India use high-speed internet, of which 63 percent are 4G.
According to the GSMA report, the amount of tax to own a mobile phone in Bangladesh is many times higher than that of India and Pakistan. That is why the number of smartphone users in Bangladesh is less than Nepal.
