This mosque is located in Chunokhola village of Shatagumbuj Union of Bagerhat Sadar Upazila, about one kilometer north-west from the historic Shatagumbuj Mosque of Bagerhat.
In 1975, the Bangladesh government declared the Chunakhola Mosque as a historical monument and took initiatives to preserve it under the Directorate of Archaeology. In 1983, UNESCO listed this mosque as a 'World Cultural Heritage' as part of the ancient city built by 'Khan-ul-Azam Ulugh Khan-i-Jahan', the founder of the then 'Khalifabad' city-state, along with the historic six-domed mosque.
Chunakhola Masjid, situated to the north of Bibi Begni Masjid, is currently located in the midst of a cropland. But there must have been a settlement in the vicinity of this mosque. There is a legend that this mosque was built around the guard post which was west of Hazrat Khan Jahan's residence.
The square mosque with a dome is about 40 feet long on the outside and 25 feet on the inside. This mosque of Khanjahanian heritage of the Sultanate period has a total of 5 doors on 3 sides.
There are a total of 3 doors including 1 big (main) door on the east side and 2 doors each on the north and south sides in this mosque. The eastern large door is 9 feet high and 4 feet 4 inches wide and the 2 smaller doors are 7 feet high and 3 feet wide. Door 2 on the north-south side is over 9 feet in height and 5 feet in width.
The Dewar of the mosque is 7 feet 8 inches thick and has 4 round brick pillars or pillars in the Khan Jahani style at the 4 outer corners. Regular prayers are offered at Chunakhol Mosque.
