India's criticized religious guru Ram Rahim sentenced to life in prison

The Dhaka Times Desk India's criticized 'religious guru and social reformer' Gurmeet Ram Rahim Singh has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the country's court. The sentence was given in a 19-year-old murder case.

According to a Hindustan Times report, in addition to the head of Dera Sacha Sauda, 4 others have been sentenced to life in the 2002 murder case.

A special CBI court in Panchkula convicted Gurmeet Ram Rahim, Krishnan Lala, Jasbir Singh, Avtar Singh and Sabdil in connection with the murder of former Dera manager Ranjit Singh on October 8.

On October 18, the CBI lawyer said that the court has sentenced 5 people to life. Along with this, Gurmeet Ram Rahim has been ordered to pay a fine of 31 lakh taka and the other 4 people have been ordered to pay a fine of 50 thousand taka.

It is to be noted that on July 10, 2002, the former manager of the Dera, Ranjith, was shot dead in Khanpur Kolyan village of Kurukshetra, Haryana. It is claimed from various quarters that Ranjith was murdered on the suspicion of being involved in circulating anonymous letters alleging sexual harassment of women at the Dera headquarters.
