The Dhaka Times Desk The United Nations is leading an operation to safely evacuate nearly 1,000 Ukrainian civilians from a steel plant besieged by Russian forces in the war-torn southern port city of Mariupol.

Also, as many as 100,000 Ukrainian civilians may still be living in the city, an area controlled by Russian forces on the northern coast of the Sea of Azov that has been almost razed to the ground after bombardment over the past two months.
Initially, the Russian Defense Ministry said that a total of 46 people, including a group of 25 and 21 others, had been evacuated. But the Azov Regiment, a Ukrainian unit protecting the steelworks, said 20 women and children were among the evacuees.
Meanwhile, Speaker of the US House of Representatives Nancy Pelosi and six other Democratic lawmakers made an unannounced visit to the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Saturday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.
