Movies are being released in Saudi Arabia for the last 4 years only. After a 35-year-long ban was lifted, West Asian films became the biggest release in the once staunchly Islamophobic country. Movies that touch on sensitive religious or political issues, sex and homosexuality are still banned in the country.
This time, the Saudi government insisted on making its own movies. For that purpose, the government of the country announced to provide financial support to the producers in the production that brings out their culture, natural beauty, history and the story of the people of Saudi.
Hollywood-based influential portal Deadline reported in a report that the producers will get back up to 40 percent of the money spent on the production of movies on certain subjects. The Saudi Film Commission made this announcement at the Cannes Film Festival.
Saudi Arabia has produced 3 Hollywood films, 8 cultural films and several documentaries in the last 18 months. Previously, the US magazine Variety reported in a report that in 2021, Saudi Arabia's income from the movie market was 450 million US dollars, which is more than 3,850 crore rupees in Bangladeshi currency.
Due to such revenues, research firm Omdia predicts that Saudi Arabia will become the world's 10th largest cinema market by 2025. At present, there are 154 cinema halls in the country, showing movies on 500 screens. Already the government of Saudi Arabia has invested 64 billion US dollars in their entertainment sector.
