The Dhaka Times Desk During a raid on the Bangkok apartment of a wealthy Myanmar businessman accused of drug and money laundering, Thai officials found information on the assets of the Myanmar junta chief's two adult children.

A Thai official and two people familiar with the incident confirmed the matter on condition of anonymity. They said property deeds and bank records in the names of Min Aung Hlaing's daughter and son were found at the businessman Tu Min Lat's Bangkok home when he was arrested in late September last year. Lat, 53, along with three other Thai nationals were arrested on charges of conspiracy to smuggle drugs and money laundering. Several sources also claim that Lat, a hotel, energy and mining tycoon, is a close associate of Hlaing, the junta leader who overthrew Myanmar's democratically elected government in February 2021. Lat also supplied useful equipment to the Myanmar military.
The wealthy Myanmar businessman is currently in pre-trial detention in Thailand, his lawyer could not be reached for comment. Thai authorities have not taken any legal action against Hlaing's two children despite the discovery of assets in the anti-narcotics operation. Thai authorities did not even consider their involvement relevant in the investigation against Lat. The junta leader's son Aung Pae Son and daughter Khin Thiri Thet Mon are under ban in the United States and Canada, as is their father. There was no response when they were asked for their comments on the incident in Thailand.
The U.S. says Hlaing's two children benefited from the business by taking direct advantage of their father's position and dirty dealings. Hlaing was not immediately available for comment. Multiple messages were sent to Myanmar's military junta seeking comment, but there was no response. A total of $8960,000 in assets including luxury cars, watches and expensive bags and $239,910 in cash were seized in a late September raid on the flat in Bangkok's Belle Grand Rama 9, the country's police said.
