Poveglia, the haunted island of Venice, is up for auction

The Dhaka Times Desk Venice's most haunted haunted island leased in Italy will be auctioned off for sale next month. The authorities of the region where the island is located are taking this step to increase their own revenue.

Poveglia is a small island located in St. Mark's Square in the Venetian lagoon. Some of the main properties here include a cattle shed, an ashram. An online medium is collaborating for this auction. The 17-acre island was the subject of a 14th-century battle between the Venetians (inhabitants of Venice) and the Genoese (inhabitants of Gennis). The forts and cannons of that war can still be seen here. Prior to the 18th century, the island was used as a major port of call for ships arriving in Venice.

After plague was discovered on two ships, the island was sealed off. But the working and guest people here were not evacuated. As a result the people living here get infected and die without any treatment. Since then it has become the island of legend that the unsatisfied souls of those who died return to this island. A hospital was established here in 1922 but the hospital had to be closed in 1968 due to rumors that the patients who came to the hospital for treatment became mentally disturbed. The rumor gained more ground when the director of the hospital went insane and committed suicide by jumping from the top of the hospital.

The island is currently closed to visitors. An American presenter tours the island. Forbidden enters the hospital and builds a series on the island to reveal that the island is haunted. Italian authorities want to sell the island and turn the hospital inside into a luxury hotel. Four special properties listed for sale include a monastery, the old town of Taranto in Puglia, a hospital and a 15th-century cowshed with a nearby fortress that was used to fend off Turkish attacks.

The original 14th-century barracks building on the island of Puglia has been auctioned for $3.8 million. But the authorities hope to raise about $500 million from its auction, along with other large and small properties. This huge amount of money is expected to play a very effective role in this recession in Italy.
