Gangni's Bamundi Kachari house is on the verge of destruction

The Dhaka Times Desk The Bamundi Kachari House of Meherpur's Gangni Upazila, a memorial of the torture, oppression and torture of the British Baniyas, is about to be destroyed. On the one hand, due to the lack of renovation, the beauty of the Kachari house has been damaged, on the other hand, drug addicts and thieves have dug up the floor of the house in the hope of hidden wealth, valuable marble stones and bricks. On the other hand, the influential have taken over several properties. It can also become a tourist center if preserved and renovated.

As far as is known, after the fall of the notorious indigo dealer James Hill before the partition, the famous zamindar Batkrishna Roy Chowdhury of Calcutta took the lease of the area. His zamindari activities continued. Zamindar Batkrishna Roy Chowdhury chose the Bamandi Kachari house for these activities.

There are fortified bedrooms, dance rooms, prisons and tombs in the courtyard. There is a tradition that if the zamindar showed inability to pay the rent or tax or was late in paying the rent, the cultivators were put to death after brutal torture. The beautiful women of the area were also not spared from the evil eye of the zamindar's Naib Gomsatmads. They were caught and killed after the fun. Many women were kept as baijis or guards. If anyone protested against this, he too was killed and thrown into the death pit. The horse house is on the west side of the main gate of the kachari house.

Later Vinod Bihari Babu of Khmerdiar in Bheramara of Kushtia became the owner of the zamindari by purchase from zamindar Batkrinch Roy Chowdhury. They managed the zamindari till the country became independent. Even before the partition of the country, Kachari activities were conducted in two rooms of the Kachari house. In that manner, Bamundi UP Land Office has been operating in that Kachari house since independence.

Bamundi UP Land Assistant Officer Bajlur Rashid said that 3.15 acres of Ambagan, 0.84 acres of paddy land, 2.21 acres of ponds, 0.53 acres of houses and 0.30 acres of land are located under the Kachari house. The revenue department has granted leases to Ambagan and some lands adjacent to Ambagan. 1 acre of 30 century land next to the hut has been taken over by the local influentials.

Locals said that after the independence of the country, many Kachari houses were vandalized in various places in search of treasure. Due to lack of renovation and conservation, the structures of the house are going towards destruction day by day. At the instigation of local influencers, the drug addicts took away the bricks and timber of the building. Many tourists still come from far and wide to see the historic Kachari house. School college teachers and students came on educational tour. Many people come here to spend time on special days. The people of the area demand that the Kachari house, a witness of history, should be renovated and preserved and declared a tourist center here too.
