The Dhaka Times Desk A UK-based research organization has suggested reducing meat consumption to prevent a further two degrees Celsius rise in global temperatures.
In a report entitled 'Changing Climate, Changing Diets: Pathways to Lower-Meat Consumption', Chatham House said, 'Identifying the dangers of excess meat consumption through collective action could play a 'major role' in preventing climate change.' It further states, 'If it fails, it will be impossible to prevent global warming from exceeding the danger threshold.'
The International Conference on Climate Change is being held in Paris, the capital of France, on November 30. This is the 21st conference of 'Conference of Parties' or COP.
According to a BBC report, the issue of climate change around this conference is getting the importance it is now in the international arena, it never got before the Copenhagen conference in 2009.
The BBC said that while fossil fuels and the transport sector gained international attention around the conference to reduce carbon emissions, the issue of the livestock sector remained in the background. However, about 15 percent of the world's total greenhouse gas emissions are caused by livestock, which is roughly equal to the total emissions of all cars, trains, ships, and airplanes.
For a long time, developing countries have blamed the uncontrolled industrialization of Western countries for global warming. These developing countries are also demanding compensation from polluting countries to overcome the terrible damage caused by pollution.
The Chatham House report also said that the United States leads the world in terms of meat consumption as well as pollution. Every citizen of the country eats an average of 250 grams of meat per day. According to health experts, that is almost four times the need!
