According to media reports, the Australian National Archives is looking into how this letter reached Australia so many years ago. During the Franco-Prussian War, this letter was written by a child to his mother.
The date of the letter suggests that it was written in 1870 by a man living in the French capital to his mother in Normandy, northern France. In that letter, he wanted to know whether the mother and her family are safe?
The National Archives says it has no information on how the letter balloon got there.

Louise Doyley, assistant director-general of the National Archives of Australia, told the BBC that the letter essentially provided an opportunity to learn about French history at the time. During the Franco-Prussian War, from September 1870 to January 1871, that is, Paris was occupied by Prussian forces for more than four months.

According to one source, about two million letters were sent by hot air balloon due to the enemy cutting the telegraph wire passing through the river Seine. The letters were carefully filled in small envelopes and blown over the enemy in balloons.

The stamp found on this letter shows that it was posted on December 7, 1870. How it got to Australia is still a mystery.

It is understood that the Australian National Archives is now trying to find out if any of the sender's relatives live in Brisbane or have any connection to Australia.
