Newly elected US President Donald Trump is going to appoint retired Marine General James Mattis as the next Secretary of Defense of the United States.
Yesterday (Thursday) announced the name of James Mattis, the Republican leader Trump completed almost all the top positions of his administration. The post of National Security Advisor will be completed by the Senate if approved by the administration.
"He (James Mattis) is the best we have for this position," Donald Trump said at an event in Ohio.
In the history of the Pentagon, this 66-year-old General Mattis is better known as 'Mad Dog'. General Mattis was critical of Barack Obama's Middle East policy, especially Iran.
The reason is that General Mattis thinks that Iran alone is causing all kinds of instability and peace in the Middle East.
Addressing supporters, Trump said, 'We are going to appoint our 'mad dog' Mattis as Secretary of Defense. He saw World War II commander General George Patton up close. He is indeed the true general of generals.'
In 1991, General Mattis first led the Gralf war. Then in 2001, he led the US forces in southern Afghanistan.
He also participated in the war against Iraq in 2003. A year later, he played an important role in the Battle of Fallujah.
General Mattis retired as US Central Command in 2013. Correspondents believe that General Mattis is going to be recruited as a popular choice in the US Army. But Trump may have to gain legal momentum to take him on.
This is because, according to US law, one cannot wear a Defense Department uniform until they have completed 7 years of retirement.
But with majorities in the House of Representatives and Congress, Republicans are expected to be able to amend the law to validate the appointment of James Mattis.
