The Dhaka Times Desk The issue that has been raging among people since the US election is once again moving in a different direction. US President Donald Trump's signing of sanctions against Russia has again raised doubts about the direction of world politics.
After many talks and various speculations, US President Donald Trump has finally signed the new US sanctions against Russia. Trump signed the bill on Wednesday morning US time. That is why the bill has now become law. Trump, however, had no other choice as members of Congress voted almost unanimously in favor of the bill. The reason is that the bill received the support of enough congressmen in Congress to override the president's veto.
White House Counselor Kellyanne Conway confirmed Trump's signing of the bill in a TV interview.
US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, however, also expressed his displeasure with Trump over the bill. He said, we are not fully satisfied with this law.
The main purpose of this ban is Russia's interference in the 2016 US presidential election. Added to this is Russia's annexation of the Crimean peninsula of Ukraine. The US Congress wants to ensure that Russia is punished in these cases through this ban. However, Donald Trump has always denied allegations of Russian interference to help him in the US presidential election.
The United States House of Representatives approved the bill on July 25. It passed the Senate without any changes on July 27. It was thought that Donald Trump could veto the bill. But in the end, despite the reluctance, Trump signed the bill under pressure.
White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee said Donald Trump was aware of the first version of the bill. He also held a meeting with the concerned parties regarding its important aspects.
It is known that this bill is just a continuation of the anti-Russian measures taken by the former President Obama administration. The Obama administration imposed several sanctions because of Russia's interference in the US presidential election. Obama's executive orders on July 26 and 29, 2016 issued some sanctions.
The new sanctions will impose restrictions on Russian and US armed forces, intelligence agencies and the defense sector. In addition, due to this ban, Russian companies, especially in the energy sector, will not receive loans from any Western country.
The bill would authorize the US government to take a number of actions, including seizing assets deposited in banks and denying visas. The bill would also allow steps to be taken to stop alleged actions aimed at undermining U.S. cybersecurity for the benefit of the Russian government.
It is known that some parts of the previous law have been changed in this new bill. That is why the US President cannot withdraw the sanctions imposed on Russia at will. He must impose sanctions against Russia on specific issues.
On the other hand, as a countermeasure to the new US sanctions, Russia has already ordered to reduce the number of US embassy staff.
All over the world, there were various rumors about Russia, especially after the US election. After the passage of this bill, those rumors are now expected to flow elsewhere. Where world politics goes now remains to be seen or time will tell.
