The Dhaka Times Desk Scientists have discovered a new species of the largest dinosaur in history. According to a report by National Geographic, this gigantic dinosaur species named Petagotitan meorum is mentioned as the largest animal to ever walk the earth.
According to scientists, this species roamed the South American region about 100 million years ago. This long-necked herbivore weighs 69 tons, which is equal to a Boeing 737 airplane!
Scientists have said that this dinosaur species is a member of the family of Titanosaurus, another giant dinosaur in history.
According to Diego Paul, a researcher from Argentina, a small group of the Titanosaurus family has evolved to such a large size.
He also said that at the same time, standing in front of another giant dinosaur, the T-Rex, would look like a lion standing in front of an elephant.
Scientists already knew about Titanosaurus. However, the discovery of this new species has opened the door to new research. It is known that in 2012, scientists found fossils of Petagotitans in the southern part of Argentina. So far, scientists have found 6 dinosaur fossils of this species.
After a long study, scientists published a research paper about this dinosaur species on August 8. There, this Petagotitan is mentioned not only as the largest dinosaur, but also as the largest animal to ever walk the Earth's soil.
A skeleton of Petagotitan was put on display at the American Museum of Natural History in New York in 2016.
Scientists have named this dinosaur after the Petago region, where the Titans lived. The Greek word Titan means monster.
Note that the average length of an adult Petagotitan is 122 feet or 37 meters. About 20 feet or 6 meters in length. Their weight will be equal to about 12 African elephants!
