Palestinians have been protesting along the Gaza border with Israel for the past few weeks. About 60 Palestinian protesters were killed last Monday by Israeli security forces in connection with this protest. So this is another sad day in the history of Palestine. Because so many people have died in the same day in the history of Palestine.
The next day, Tuesday, there was a protest there as well. Meanwhile, 15 May is observed by Palestinians as Al-Nakba Day or Day of Catastrophe. Since this day, Palestinians have lost their homes and become refugees.
Behind the scenes of Nakba Day
This Nakba Day originated on May 15, 1948. Then the Arab-Israeli war started. Just one day earlier, on May 14, Israel declared itself an independent state.
At that time the area was under British control. There was then a special system in place called Mandate Palestine. Just as it was about to end, Israel was declared an independent state.
In areas where the state of Israel was declared, most Arabs were expelled by Israeli forces, or forced to flee.
750,000 Palestinians became refugees during the two-year Arab-Israeli war of 1948-1949. Then in June 1967 war broke out again between the Arabs and Israel. During that time, thousands more Palestinians were displaced from the West Bank and Gaza Strip.
It is known that at least 5 million Palestinians are currently registered as refugees in the United Nations. Most of them live in Jordan, the West Bank of the Gaza Strip, Syria, Lebanon and East Jerusalem. A third of them live in refugee camps.
To commemorate this day, Palestinians hold protests every year on Nakba Day. On the occasion of the day they gather near the Israeli border and the day is characterized by intense Palestinian tensions with Israel. There have been two major incidents of violence around Nakba Day.
The main demand of the Palestinians is the right to return to their land. The basis of this claim is a resolution adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in 1948.
"Refugees who wish to return to their homes and live in peace with their neighbors must be allowed to do so," the resolution said.
But Israel's statement is that it is impossible to take back 5 million refugees. Because if something like that happens, they will become the majority in the country of 8.5 million people and Israel will end as a Jewish state.
According to the BBC, Israeli and Palestinian leaders have agreed on a solution to the refugee crisis after a compromise between the two sides. But that peace talk has now become an impossible matter. For which bloodshed is a daily occurrence. I want to see the end of the whole world consciousness.
