The auction was held on the first floor of the Eiffel Tower last Monday. Various auctioneers participated in it. A French auctioneer bought the skeleton for 2 million euros (2.3 million US dollars), beating the highest bids of 1.8 million euros by Japanese and Swedish auctioneers.
The skeleton was found during an excavation in Wyoming, USA in 2014. After examining the eleven meter long and 2.6 meter high dinosaur, scientists say that it is a different species of dinosaur. This is the only skeleton of this species among the total dinosaur skeletons discovered in the world.
"It's impossible to classify this skeleton as an Allosaurus" because it was more robust, "its shoulder blades and teeth are somewhat different from other dinosaurs," said dinosaur expert Eric Zanetti. It lived on earth about 150 million years ago. About 70% of the skeleton are still intact. It is believed that this dinosaur died of old age. The buyer of the skeleton said he bought it to put it on display in a French museum.
This is not the first auction of dinosaur skeletons. Earlier in 1997, a fully intact skeleton sold for US$8.36.
