The Taliban have been at war with the Afghan government for 16 years. They announced a ceasefire for the first 3 days of Eid on June 9 on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr.

The Taliban, who had been fighting just a few days earlier, surrendered their weapons at security checkpoints in Kabul on Saturday and entered the city.

Eyewitnesses said excitedly that they could not believe their eyes when they saw the scene where Afghan soldiers were mingling with Taliban fighters. Such a scene was not limited to the capital but was also seen in other places.

After Eid prayers, Afghan President Ashraf Ghani told reporters that the Taliban had been praised for declaring a temporary ceasefire. I hope it lasts longer.

Kabul police say dozens of Taliban members entered the capital without weapons during the unprecedented ceasefire announced on the occasion of Eid.

Pictures and videos of Afghan soldiers exchanging Eid greetings with the Taliban in other cities outside the capital have already spread through social media including Facebook and Twitter.
