The whole world is excited about the football World Cup in Russia. A taxi ran over soccer fans on a sidewalk near Red Square in the capital Moscow on Saturday.
Police said, eight people were injured in this incident. They said that the taxi driver has been arrested in this incident. A criminal investigation is underway against him.
According to initial reports, such an incident occurred when the driver lost control of the vehicle. Russian state news agency Interfax said police believe the taxi driver was drunk at the time of the incident. However, Moscow's traffic authorities have dismissed such reports as baseless. Interfax later reported that the driver was asleep while driving. However, it was not immediately known how seriously the pedestrians were injured in the incident.
The incident took place on Ilinka Street, about 650 feet away from Moscow's famous GUM shopping arcade and Red Square. When the driver tried to run away, the local people caught him and handed him over to the police. Moscow is one of the 11 cities in Russia where the World Cup is being held.
