A charming haor of Sunamganj

The picture you are looking at is Chaikkuri Bill or Haor of Naikuri Kanda in Sunamganj. An incredibly beautiful landscape. This bill is full of water.

Tanguar Haor is located at the foothills of Meghalaya hills in Dharmapasha and Tahirpur upazilas of Sunamganj district. More than 30 jharas (waterfalls) from the Meghalaya hills join this haor. It is the largest wetland in Tanguar Haor district with an area of 9,727 hectares consisting of 51 haors in 18 mauzas of two upazilas.

পানিবহুল মূল হাওর ২৮ বর্গকিলোমিটার। আর বাকি অংশ গ্রামগঞ্জ ও কৃষিজমি। একসময় গাছ-মাছ-পাখি ও প্রাকৃতিক জীববৈচিত্র্যের আধার ছিল এই হাওরটিতে। ১৯৯৯ সালে টাঙ্গুয়ার হাওরকে ‘প্রতিবেশগত সংকটাপন্ন এলাকা’ হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়। আর তখনই অবসান হয় দীর্ঘ ৬০ বছরের ইজারাদারির।

২০০০ সালের ২০ জানুয়ারি এই হাওরকে ‘রামসার স্থান’ (Ramsar site) হিসেবে ঘোষণা করা হয়। হাওর এলাকার মানুষের আর্থসামাজিক অবস্থার পরিবর্তন, সম্পদ সংরক্ষণ এবং টেকসই ব্যবস্থাপনা নিশ্চিত করার লক্ষ্যে বাংলাদেশ ও সুইজারল্যান্ড সরকারের মধ্যে ২০০১ সালের ১২ ফেব্রুয়ারি একটি সমঝোতা স্মারকও স্বাক্ষরিত হয়। ২০০৩ খ্রিস্টাব্দের ৯ নভেম্বর থেকে হাওরের নিয়ন্ত্রণ নেয় সুনামগঞ্জ জেলা প্রশাসন।

Very beautiful environment prevails in this haor. Every day many tourists come to this place. They go back and forth with the boat to see the environment here. They are impressed by the natural environment here.
