The Dhaka Times Desk Such a news is not really believable. The news is that 20 million people are victims of extreme poverty in the United States! The matter has come up in one of the statistics of the country.
According to media reports, at least 40 million people live below the poverty line in the United States. Out of this, another 2 crore people are living below the extreme poverty line. It is also reported that the number of people living on less than two dollars a day is increasing day by day. As a result, income inequality has become acute in the country. Such information has emerged in the latest survey of the US Department of Statistics.
According to US Census Bureau data updated in September 2017, 1 in 8 people in the United States is poor. Which is 12.7 percent of the total population. Of these, 1.85 million people live in extreme poverty, with family incomes less than half of the poverty line.
Another study found that 40 percent of those who were poor in the United States in 1999 were very poor. That rate increased to 46 percent in 2015.
The United States ranks 35th among the 37 developed countries in the OECD in terms of reducing poverty and inequality. Income inequality among Western countries is highest in the United States, the report said.
While preparing a report on the poor people of the United States and the country's human rights situation, United Nations researcher Alston said that income inequality has increased greatly in America. Alston commented, 'The country's poverty situation is seen as disproportionate to its wealth and inconsistent with the country's founding principles of human rights.'
On the other hand, he showed that the country is lagging behind in poverty alleviation with the data published by the official statistics in the United States. Poverty can be eradicated with maximum speed if there is political will. The United Nations researcher Alston blamed the country's top rich people for this inequality.
