However, the production of coconuts available in our country is very low. Magic coconut seedlings have been imported to overcome this problem. Today we will know why to grow magic coconut and what are its benefits.
The Ministry of Agriculture of Bangladesh is giving importance to the cultivation of short varieties of hybrid coconut trees. This coconut tree will give about three times more fruit than our native trees. Coconuts can be obtained from this tree in just two to two and a half years after sowing. Whereas it takes about 6-8 years to get coconut from our indigenous trees. Generally, two short varieties of coconut trees are cultivated in Bangladesh. One is the DJ full hybrid dwarf coconut and the other is an 'improved and shorter 'open pollinated (OP)' variety imported from Vietnam. There are two types of this variety collected from Vietnam, one is Siam Green Coconut and the other is Siam Basnu Coconut.
Both varieties yield about 150 coconuts annually. But it's not a hybrid. An official of the Ministry of Agriculture identified two varieties of coconut. One of the characteristics of that variety is that its seedlings can be produced from mature coconuts and the trees will bear fruit in two to two and a half years after planting. The water of Siam Basnu coconut variety is very sweet and fragrant. 300 ml of water can be obtained from each can.
As it is a bent species, the tree starts bearing fruit when it is 2 to 4 feet tall. So it is easy to grow coconuts from this tree. It is very difficult to resist the attack of insects and spiders on native big trees. But since these trees are short, insects and spiders can be controlled very easily. So every year this species of tree will produce a large quantity of healthy and nutritious coconuts.
The 'Asian Pacific Coconut Community' has been working on coconut development in the Asian continent. Its head office is in Indonesia. Currently, the organization is working on the development of coconut varieties of 18 countries including Bangladesh. The Ministry of Agriculture has taken up a new project called 'Nutrition Development Project through Year-round Fruit Production' for the production of fruits throughout the year. Under this project it has already been decided to plant this magic coconut tree saplings all over the country. Magic Coconut has recently imported 20,000 seedlings from Vietnam. Later there is a plan to import more 75 thousand seedlings.
