The Dhaka Times Desk Cristiano Ronaldo is on course to become the world's highest-paid footballer after signing a new contract with Real Madrid. Real Madrid have opened advanced talks with Ronaldo's representatives over a five-year deal worth around €155m, which would see the Portuguese forward earn around €15m a year after tax if signed. In that case, this is going to be the most lucrative deal in football history.
Ronaldo, who has scored 201 goals in 199 games in four seasons for Real Madrid, suddenly made noise last Thursday with a statement on Twitter that read, "All the news about my contract renewal at Real Madrid is wrong." A few days before that, however, he expressed his interest in staying at Real Madrid even after the contract expires in 2015.
"I haven't spoken to anyone yet, but I know we will reach an agreement on a new contract," Ronaldo said after Portugal beat Russia 1-0 in a World Cup qualifier last week. The national team is the most important thing at this moment." He also revealed in May that his future had nothing to do with Mourinho leaving the Bernabeu, saying, "I'm not worried about what Mourinho is doing, I'm worried about Real Madrid and my future." The once great relationship between Mourinho and Ronaldo has been strained since the pair fell out over Mourinho's tactical decisions against Valencia in January.
Ronaldo's unhappiness in life at the Bernabeu was well-discussed at the end of last season. He was somewhat disappointed with the lack of public support from the club in the Ballon d'Or race, the strained relationship with teammate Marcelo and the lack of talk from the club about a new contract. Now, however, that situation has changed.
After Florentino Perez became president of Real Madrid again, in the summer of 2009, Ronaldo, who was playing for Manchester United, was signed to the club for a record €94 million. Currently, his tax income stands at 10 million euros annually. When Ronaldo arrived at the club, a law required foreigners living in Spain for less than 10 years and earning over €120,000 a year to pay just 23 per cent of their income, instead of the usual 45 per cent. One of the first to take advantage of this law was David Beckham, who arrived in Spain in 2003 from Manchester United, as the law is often called "Beckham Law" says But that benefit is no longer there, and Ronaldo will also have to pay 52 percent of his income as tax on a new contract. As a result, Ronaldo's claimed 15 million euros net of Madrid, the annual cost behind this Portuguese will be around 31 million euros.
But Real Madrid also understands the importance of Ronaldo. They have recently failed to sign Neymar, Dortmund duo Gundogan and Lewandowski have also failed to sign. Among other transfer targets, Aguero, Falcao are not available, Gareth Bale is a huge cost, Edinson Cavani is also a price issue. Ronaldo's contract renewal therefore becomes more important.
Real Madrid president Perez also wants to see Ronaldo in the club in the future. He said that he wants to build a Real Madrid team around Ronaldo and that he wants Ronaldo to be the highest paid player in the world.
So they are taking Ronaldo's salary increase into account and making him a higher paid player than Messi. Messi earns 13 million euros per year at Barca without bonuses, Falcao earns 14 million euros per year at Monaco and Samuel Eto'o earns 20 million euros per year at Anzhi Makhachkala. However, Eto'o's contract is for 3 years and Ronaldo will surpass him in terms of the entire contract.
Currently, another issue is the player's image right, which currently has 60 percent of Ronaldo and the remaining 40 percent of Real Madrid. Ronaldo, however, wants more for his share and his recent tweets, leaked to the media about the negotiations, are believed to be to pressure the club in that regard. However, both sides are hopeful that a resolution will be found in the next few weeks.
