Rain took away half of the entire match. At one point, it seemed that the game might be called off, or that the ICC would play again the next day. But at one point the rain stopped, after calculating it was seen that both teams can play 20 overs, ICC gave their consent for the game. As a result, the 50-over match turned into a 20-over T20 match. However, none of the sides could riot with the bat on the field, instead, the bowlers of both teams started killing the batsman with the ball in the rain-soaked field. Indian bowlers won it. Chasing India's 129 runs, England stopped at 124 runs. India left the field as champions by 5 runs!
The Indian batsmen could not take advantage of the wet field to bat. The English bowlers had to fall in the face of the cannon throughout the period, but in between Dhawan-Kohli's pair of 31 runs and Kohli-Jadeja's pair of 47 runs, India scored 129 runs by losing 7 wickets in 20 overs. Stuart Broad struck the first blow by returning Rohit Sharma for 19 runs. Ravi Bopara then broke the Dhawan-Kohli partnership, dismissing Dhawan, the highest run-scorer of the tournament. Dhawan scored 31 runs off 24 balls.
After Rohit Sharma's dismissal, India was 50 for 1 until Dhawan's dismissal, from there it was 66 for 5! Karthik is caught out by Treadwell. Having broken the Dhawan-Kohli duo, Bopara struck again in the 13th over, dismissing Raina and Dhoni. Raina was dismissed for 1 run and Dhoni returned to the pavilion for his first wicket since October 2010.
Kohli was caught out by James Anderson with an average of 43 runs off 34 balls for the seventh wicket pair of 47 runs. A little later Ashwin was run out by Ian Bell. Meanwhile, India's score is 7 wickets for 119 runs. Jadeja took 129 runs from there. He remained unbeaten with 33 runs off 25 balls. Ravi Bopara got 3 wickets and Anderson, Broad, Treadwell got 1 wicket each.
England fell into disaster chasing runs. Cook, Trott, Root and Bell return within 46 runs. Then Bell tried to handle 13 and Trott 20 runs. Ashwin then trotted first in two consecutive overs and then picked up Root. Jadeja sent Bale back for 46 runs. Cook and Root scored 2 and 7 runs respectively. Then Eoin Morgan and Ravi Bopara put on 64 runs for the fifth wicket to give England victory.
That's when Ishant Sharma entered the scene. In the 18th over, this pacer returned two consecutive balls to Eoin Morgan who scored 33 runs and Bopara who scored 30 runs. England then 110 runs for 6 wickets. Then in the 19th over, the English camp again suffered a double blow. Jadeja bowled Buttler in 18.2 overs, Rohit Sharma-Dhoni ran out Bresnan in 18.4 overs. In the last over, England scored 124 runs for the team's 8 wickets without losing any more wickets. Broad and Treadwell remained unbeaten on 7 and 5 respectively. India won by 5 runs.
Yadav took 1 wicket and Ashwin, Jadeja, Ishant Sharma 2 wickets each. After 33 runs with the bat and 2 wickets with the ball, Ravindra Jadeja got the man of the match recognition. Meanwhile, Indian opener Dhawan, who has been credited with a flood of runs throughout the tournament, was recognized as the man of the series. Dhawan scored 363 runs with two centuries and a half-century.
Meanwhile, Mahendra Singh Dhoni has a unique record of winning trophies as a captain in all ICC tournaments. Under his leadership, India became the World T20 champion in 2007, the dream World Cup cricket champion in 2011 and the champion of the recently concluded ICC Champions Trophy!
