The 200-year-old National Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, was destroyed by a fire on Sunday night. In this museum, the oldest in Brazil, about 2 million artifacts were preserved, starting from antiquities and historical monuments.
The building caught fire sometime after the museum closed on Sunday night. However, it is not yet clear how the fire started.
Most of the artefacts stored in the museum are believed to have been destroyed in the fire. However, it is not known whether anyone was injured in the fire.
Video broadcast on local television showed the entire building engulfed in flames. Firefighters are trying to bring the fire under control.
"This is a sad day for Brazilians," Brazilian President Michel Temer said in a tweet. Immense loss of our history with that building.'
It should be noted that along with various historical monuments of Brazil, the antiquities of different countries including Egypt were preserved in that museum. The museum's natural history collection included dinosaur bones and a 12,000-year-old human skull.
It is known that the National Museum of Brazil, established in 1818, was jointly in charge of the care of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the Ministry of Education of Brazil.
