History:
Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin established the Bangladesh Folk and Crafts Foundation in an old house in Sonargaon historical Panam Nagar on March 12, 1975 in an effort to develop the folk culture of modern rural Bangladesh. Later in 1981, the artist Zainul Abedin tried to build this museum in an open environment to highlight the artistic activities of the common people of Bangladesh centered on the nature and rural environment of Bengal under the open sky in the complex of 150 bigha area and the Bangladesh Folk and Crafts Foundation complex was shifted to the almost 100 years old Sardarbari.
Spectacular:
The museum houses the handicrafts of the illiterate artists of the neglected villages of Bangladesh, the everyday products of public life. In these artefacts, the form and image of the traditional folk art of ancient Bengal blossomed. There are total 10 galleries in Sardarbari. The galleries include wood carvings, handicrafts, tapestries and masks, artifacts based on tribal life, rural folk life environment, folk musical instruments and burnt clay artifacts, copper-bronze-brass artifacts, iron-making artifacts, folk ornaments and many more. A little to the east of the building is the Zainul Abedin Memorial Museum established in a modern building rich in folk architecture. There are only two galleries in this building. Among these two galleries, one gallery is made of wood, which is rich in ancient and modern artefacts. Apart from that, the natural features of Bangladesh are illustrated with very attractive and beautiful models, the overall process of making and selling various handicrafts from wood and wood. Outside of these two buildings there are library, documentation center, seminar hall, canteen, theater, rural garden and different kinds of trees, beautiful lake, boating for inter-lake, beautiful fishing system and Pankhiraj boat.
How to go:
There are buses from Gulistan to Mograpara intersection. According to the service, the fare per person is 30 to 45 taka. Special buses pass over the flyover, so the fare is a little higher but the time is shorter. Autorickshaw fare from Mograpara to Sonargaon Folk Art Museum is Tk 10 per person. Tickets to Sonargaon Folk and Crafts Museum are Tk 20 per person.
