The Dhaka Times Desk The high-speed rail line between the holy cities of Mecca and Medina in Saudi Arabia was inaugurated yesterday (Wednesday). In this new rail system, one can go from one city to another in less than two hours.
According to media reports, the journey takes more than twice as long by road. The new 'Haramain' railway of 450 km length is a part of 'Saudi Vision-2030'.
Apart from Makkah-Madinah, this train will be able to travel quickly between Jeddah and Rabigh cities. It takes only 21 minutes to travel between Jeddah and Makkah.
It is reported that the Makkah station is about 3 km away from the Holy Kaaba and the Madina city station is located in the Knowledge Economic City (KEC) on King Abdul Aziz Road.
A total cost of 6 billion dollars was spent to run the train in this system connecting Makkah, Madinah and Jeddah. It is one of the largest communication projects in the Middle East.
It is known that about 60 million people can travel through this route annually. It will be commercially launched from next week.
Saudi Arabia's Communications Minister Nabil Al-Amoudi said, 'Communication between Mecca and Medina is now easier and faster than any other time in the past. The introduction of these systems will make communication easier in the future'.
