The Rohingya repatriation process begins today (Thursday). All preparations have been made to send them back to their homeland. 150 Rohingyas from 30 families are scheduled to leave today (Thursday) at noon on the first day. The UN believes there is considerable doubt as to how successful repatriation will be.
It is known that the list of 2,260 Rohingya included in the repatriation has already been handed over to the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
A meeting was held with various officials of the administration on Wednesday. At the end of the meeting, it was informed that all preparations are over. Repatriation starts on Thursday itself.
A source said the Rohingyas will first be taken to the transit camp at Ghumdhum. From there, Myanmar representatives will officially receive them. This repatriation process will continue continuously.
According to the decision of the meeting of the joint working group on October 30, a total of 2,260 Rohingyas from 485 families identified agreed to take back to Myanmar. However, the country said that it will take back only 150 people per day. Therefore, one temporary camp has been set up at Kerantali in Teknaf and another at Naikshyongchari area. They will be taken there first today (Thursday). They will then be handed over to the Myanmar authorities. Representatives of both countries will be there then. This activity will continue for the next 15 days with 150 people per day.
It should be noted that in the face of brutality of the Myanmar army last August, more than 7 lakh Rohingya fled to Bangladesh and took shelter in several camps in Ukhia-Teknaf. Earlier, another 400,000 Rohingyas came to Bangladesh for the same reason. Currently, more than 1.1 million Rohingyas are living in Ukhia-Teknaf. There are allegations of rape, murder and various tortures against the Myanmar army. Many of the allegations have been found to be true by the United Nations Human Rights Organization.
