The Dhaka Times Desk China and the United States are at loggerheads over Meng Wanzhu, the CEO of a leading Chinese telecom company. The two countries have taken opposite positions.
The United States and Canada have pledged to bring to justice Meng Wanzhu, the executive of a top Chinese telecom company detained in Vancouver, Canada at the request of the United States. They also called for the release of two Canadians detained in China as a countermeasure to the incident.
Meanwhile, the Foreign Minister and Defense Minister of the United States and Canada also held a meeting in Washington to discuss the emerging situation. Canada is seen as increasingly vulnerable to the trade war between the US and China. However, China is working to defuse its trade tensions with the US.
Meanwhile, Canada's Foreign Minister Chrystia Freeland said authorities were considering Meng Wanzhu's detention "morally" legitimate.
Meng is Huawei's chief financial officer. The US has asked Canada to arrest and extradite Huawei to the US, accusing it of doing business with Iran in violation of US sanctions.
"We agree to uphold the rule of law," Chrystia said at a joint press conference. We will ensure Meng's rights according to law. We will demonstrate that Canada's current legal process is completely free of political influence.'
He reiterated that Canada always follows the rule of law. Meng's extradition to the United States will be decided according to law.
Canada's foreign minister said, "Canada has no chance of political interference in these matters."
Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the US has and will continue to deeply respect the rule of law in all areas.
