The Dhaka Times Desk Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has again offered to grant citizenship to the Rohingya who fled to Bangladesh to save their lives after being victims of ethnic cleansing in Myanmar.
He announced the voluntary acceptance of the Rohingyas while speaking at an event in Manila, the capital of the Philippines on Tuesday.
Previously, in a speech given in April last year, Duterte referred to the 'genocide' of the Rohingya in Myanmar and said that the international community has failed to solve this problem.
Sympathizing with the Rohingyas, he said, 'I sympathize with the people there. I am willing to accept (give asylum to) refugees. Europe should also divide the Rohingya.
Duterte also said Myanmar's Nobel laureate leader Aung San Suu Kyi should apologize to the people. European countries have also condemned his country for the torture of Rohingyas. But still he did not help the Rohingyas even a little bit.
Philippine presidential spokesman Harry said last year, Bataan, the Philippines, could have arranged to receive the refugees. However, the Philippine government will always have its doors open for refugees.
Note that during the Vietnam War in 1975, the Philippine government sheltered hundreds of thousands of Vietnamese refugees.
