The Dhaka Times Desk Sri Lankan Muslims are in renewed uncertainty after Sunday's horrific terrorist attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka after the name of a militant Islamic group called the National Tawheed Jamaat (NTJ).
Many are also concerned about their image. Khalekuzzaman Sohel, a Bangladeshi citizen, has been living in Colombo for business for the past 5 years. On Monday afternoon, while offering Zohar prayers at a mosque in Wallawa area of the city, he found 20/25 armed policemen guarding the mosque.
He said, "Talking to the worshipers inside, they seemed more ashamed and sad than terrified. They cannot believe that anyone from their community can carry out such barbaric attacks inside the country.”
Azman Abdullah, an official of the National Shura Council, a Muslim organization in Colombo, said that Muslims were "angry and sad" rather than scared.
"It cannot be said that there is no fear at all, there are various kinds of rumours, but we strongly believe that our Christian brothers understand that the Muslims of Sri Lanka never wish them harm in any way."
Azman Abdullah also said that the top Muslim leaders also spoke to the leaders of the Christian community. He said that banners were also hung in mosques strongly condemning this terrorist attack.
“People from all communities live in the area where I live. No problem here. But not only as a Muslim but as a citizen of this country I am really concerned. Concerned about the future of this country."
The history of inter-ethnic relations in Sri Lanka is not very good. A temporary state of emergency was declared in Kandy and several surrounding towns last year following attacks by hardline Buddhists on mosques and Muslim businesses.
Which is why many Muslims are naturally alarmed after the suspected involvement of a Muslim organization in Sunday's attack.
Farhan Nizamuddin, a journalist living in the southern city of Galle, told BBC Bengal that Muslims were angry and were demanding the "maximum punishment" for the attackers.
"Hundreds of Muslims are also writing on social media that this terror has nothing to do with Islamic teachings." A Muslim from Galle also wrote on social media, “I was born in a Muslim family, but I studied in a Christian missionary school. That is why the statue of Jesus on the cross is very close to my heart.”
Another wrote, "There are two groups in Sri Lanka - one is Sri Lankan and the other is terrorist." The Sri Lankan Islamic Association, the apex body of Sri Lankan Muslims living in Britain, said that all Sri Lankan Muslim organizations in Britain held an emergency meeting on Monday to discuss Sunday's terror attack.
Secretary of the organization Manjula Osman told the BBC that how Sri Lankan Muslims in the diaspora can help in dealing with this terrorist attack is their main concern now.
“It is true that there have long been concerns about inter-ethnic relations in Sri Lanka. But we are yet to hear of a ``wet and see approach'' as there has been a major concern among Muslims about the involvement of an Islamist organization in Sunday's attack.”
However, the government is trying to reassure the Muslims. The country's telecommunications minister, Harin Fernando, said, "The attackers do not represent the country's Muslim majority." I will not call them Muslims. The common Muslims of this country are very dignified and live in harmony with all other communities.” About 10 percent of Sri Lanka's population is Muslim.
It should be noted that about 300 people lost their lives in a series of suicide bombings in Sri Lanka last Sunday. Another 400 were seriously injured. These brutal attacks have been carried out on churches and hotels.
