It should be noted that last Thursday, 85 to 90 passengers illegally traveled to Italy by boat from Juara, Libya. In the early hours of the morning, the boat capsized with its passengers on another small boat off the coast of Tunisia. At that time, Tunisian fishermen were able to rescue 16 people alive. Out of which 14 are believed to be Bangladeshis. 4 Bangladeshis are admitted in a hospital in Zarzis, Tunisia after the boat capsized. However, it is not yet possible to confirm whether they are among the 4 rescued, said Syeda Abida Farheen, program officer of the family contact restoration department of Bangladesh Red Crescent Society.
On Sunday, Foreign Minister AKM Momen said that the number of Bangladeshis among the dead could be 30 to 35.
Those who survived the accident said that there were 32 Egyptians on the boat. But it is not known whether they are alive. Most of the 27 people identified as aboard the boat hail from villages in Sylhet, Madaripur and Noakhali districts.
The foreign minister said that because there is no embassy of Bangladesh in Tunisia, there is a delay in getting the information. The foreign minister also said that an official from the Bangladesh embassy in Libya has been sent to Tunisia to get information and take necessary measures.
