The Dhaka Times Desk A strange sight indeed. But such a scene is seen once a year. A village in the western Indian state of Goa. That village named Kardi is under water for 11 months of the year.
An amazing village. The reason is that when it floats on the water, its inhabitants return to their homes on land. On this occasion they also celebrate big festivals!
The incident began in 1986. Since then the inhabitants of this village knew that there would be no trace of the village. In that year the first dam was constructed in the province. As a result, the village was completely submerged in water. But once this village in South East Goa was a prosperous village.
But every year in May, when the water recedes, it can be seen what remains in the village. Mud, tree trunks, dilapidated houses, collapsed religious places of worship, various household items and abandoned wastelands can be seen there. All these can be seen after the water recedes. It was also said that the yield in this village is high. Three thousand people lived in this village. Paddy cultivation, and the village was surrounded by coconut trees, casunat, mango and jackfruit trees. Hindus, Muslims and Christians lived here.
But that scenario changed dramatically when Goa gained independence from the Portuguese in 1961. The first Chief Minister informed the villagers that all of South Goa would benefit if this dam, the first in the province, was constructed. Everyone from this village was shifted to a neighboring village and promised many facilities there. They were given land and compensation but the water from this dam did not reach the village where they were evacuated. Still, the residents of Kardi look forward to that May.
But what happened later, the villagers were shocked! When the water receded, they returned to their lost villages, shocked to find their homes in ruins. They also pray in the broken prayer hall. And remember the previous village.
