The ancient city of Babylon is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Dhaka Times Desk The ancient city of Mesopotamia, which is four thousand years old, has been declared a world heritage by UNESCO. Recently, Azerbaijan was recognized in the list of the World Heritage Committee of the United Nations.

According to a BBC report, since 1983, Iraq has been demanding the declaration of the site as a prestigious United Nations site.

The United Nations organization gives this recognition to all the structures or areas that are considered important for the entire mankind. That is why those places are protected under international treaties.

However, during the time of Iraq's President Saddam Hussein and the recent use of US forces in the country as a base, many places were reduced to rubble.

Meanwhile, the common people of the country welcomed UNESCO for giving Babylon such a status. Through this, the people of the country think that the significance of Babylon and Mesopotamia civilization has been accepted.

"Babylon, the center of successive empires under rulers such as Hammurabi and Nebuchadnezzar, represents the creative peak of the Neo-Babylonian Empire," says UNESCO.

'The city's Hanging Gardens are one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and have inspired worldwide artistic, popular and religious culture.'

However, they warned that this part of the newly declared World Heritage Site is under "extreme threat" and that there is an urgent need to preserve this heritage.

It should be noted that previously in 2005, the British Museum warned that the structure was on the verge of destruction due to the attack of the US forces. The British Museum authorities also said that 12 trenches have been dug across the archaeological sites.
