The construction of the new mosque in Algeria has been completed for 7 years at the cost of 1 billion dollars. This is the largest mosque in Africa.
It took 7 years to build this largest mosque in Africa, which is waiting to be opened in Algiers, the capital of Algeria.
This mosque is named The Great Mosque of Algiers or Jama Al Jazei built on an area of 4 lakh square meters. The mosque has a 265 m (870 ft) high minaret. There is also an observation deck inside the minaret.
Located very close to the Algiers coast, this compound dome mosque can hold 1.2 million worshipers at once. Moreover, there is a facility to keep 7000 cars in the underground parking of the mosque.
The mosque complex also houses a Quranic school, library, restaurant, amphitheater and a research center dedicated to Algerian history.
This mosque is currently the third largest in the world in terms of size. The largest mosques in the world in terms of size are the Holy Mosque 'Baytullah' in Mecca and 'Masjid Nabawi' in Madinah. These two mosques are the holiest places for Muslims. Every year millions of Muslims worship in this mosque during Hajj.
The minaret of the Great Mosque of Algiers is the tallest minaret in Africa. Formerly the tallest minaret in Africa was the Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca, Morocco. The height of the minaret of that mosque is 670 feet.
The mosque was supposed to be inaugurated late last year, but due to the drop in global oil prices, the mosque faced a budget crisis. Due to which its construction is delayed.
Note that the mosque in Algiers was built by the China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC). This Chinese multinational is involved in heavy industry and infrastructure construction in Africa and around the world.
