The results of the researchers' study were published in a recent issue of the journal Current Science. This long-term study has detailed the various mechanisms and geometries of continental breakup in the oceanic East Bay of Bengal.

According to the study, the marine rocks spread upwards from Kolkata and northern Rajmahal-Sylhet, Shillong through the sea floor. In fact, these were the original rocks of the Bay of Bengal. However, they are actually buried under huge amounts of silt and other waste from the Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers flowing down from the Himalayas. It is in this process that the original Bay of Bengal region and a new vast landmass were formed. At present this region is included in the territory of Bangladesh. A portion of the global ocean is thus buried under sediments or survives as islands. But for the first time, the presence of oceanic rocks beneath a vast expanse of land is seen as a unique phenomenon for Earth.

A press release in this regard said that for many years National Institute of Oceanography, Dehradun and NGC and Rice University in Houston have been jointly researching the structural evolution of the Bay of Bengal and Bangladesh. The program was continued even after a part of the research team moved to the University of Hyderabad. This important information came out after a long research.
