The Dhaka Times Desk Twitter will begin deleting accounts that have been inactive for more than six months if they are not logged in before the December 11 deadline. As a result, almost all inactive accounts on Twitter will be closed immediately.

The cooldown will include users who stopped posting on the site because they're dead in Twitter's eyes—unless someone with that person's account details can log in. This is the first time Twitter has removed such a large number of inactive accounts. As a result, a storm of criticism has started around the world.

The site said that users who did not log in could not agree to its updated privacy policy and that all their accounts were terminated after selecting the correct policy.

A proponent also said it would improve credibility by removing dormant accounts from people's follower counts, something a user might feel is of unnecessary importance. The first batch of deleted accounts will involve those registered outside the US. The company's inactivity is based on whether a person has logged in at least once in the past six months, and action will be taken by monitoring whether or not the account is regularly accessed or logged in. Twitter said that some users on the network had tried to clear usernames, but not as much.

The social media site sends emails to users of accounts to encourage users to be more vocal about using Twitter. It won't say the exact amount of how many accounts fit the criteria, though it's expected to be in the millions. It commented that they will send further notices in due course. This approach will not affect Twitter's reported user numbers, as the firm is only based on users who log into their Twitter account at least once per day. According to its latest earnings report, Twitter had 145 million daily active users as of September. They are basically users exposed to Twitter ads every day

Twitter stated in a briefing that as part of our commitment to serving the public conversation, we are working to clean up inactive accounts to present more reliable, credible information that people can trust through Twitter. Part of this effort is to encourage people to actively log in and use Twitter when they register an account, according to our Inactive Account Policy. This means that users who have died will have their accounts deleted unless a loved one or someone else has already received their log-in details and is able to sign in and accept Twitter's latest privacy policy.
