Among the historical sights of Kishoreganj district, this Delhi Akhara is about 450 years old. This Delhi Arena is located in Katkhal Union of Mithamain Upazila, a beautiful area of Kishoreganj. Although the name is Delhi Akhara, in reality this Akhara has nothing to do with Delhi in India.

It is said that the Akhara was built by the spiritual saint Narayan Goswami during the reign of Emperor Jahangir of Delhi. Inside the Akhara there is a Dharamshala, Natamandir, Guesthouse, Vaishnavadeva's residence, Pakshala, Sadhak Narayan Goswami and one of his disciples Gangaram Goswami's Samadhi.

There are two ponds on both sides of Delhi's arena and around 3,000 hijl trees are spread across the vast area. The historic Akhara and Hijal trees on the banks of the river add a special variety to the beauty of Mithamain Haor.

The real history of Delhi's Akhara

There are many cases of carnage among local people about Hijal tree and Akhara in Delhi. Sadhak Narayan Goswami was a disciple of Ramakrishna Goswami, a spiritual saint from nearby Vithalanga Akhara. At that time, this area surrounded by rivers was full of thick bushes and forests. Boats plying the river in this area would sink or suffer some other accident for mysterious reasons. Similarly, one day a treasure boat sent by the Emperor of Delhi sank along with its cargo while going through this river. The boatmen failed to recover the treasure at that time. One of the boat passengers also died of snakebite. Then saint Ramakrishna of Vitlanga got this news. He ordered his disciple Narayana Goswami to go to the site of the accident. As per Guru's order, Saint Narayan Goswami sat on the bank of the river and was engrossed in penance. Sadhaka Narayan then managed to get Goswami to shore by his sadhana. In this way the same thing happened for 7 consecutive days.

Then one day Narayana Goswami was asked to leave this place as if by a divine word. In reply the saint asks for their identity and darshan. Daiva Kantha pretends to be a resident here and assumes the form of demon. Narayana Goswami saw thousands of gigantic demons appearing around him. Saint Narayan Goswami took a promise from the demons that they would live without harming humans and that humans would not harm them. On the instructions of Saint Narayan Goswami, the demons turned into Hijal trees.

Later, with the miraculous power of Saint Narayan Goswami, he brought back alive the treasure boat that sank with its goods and the person who died from snake bite. On hearing this news, Emperor Jahangir of Delhi established an Akhara for Narayana Goswami. Since then the Akhara is said to have come to be known as Delhi Akhara.

Thousands of Hijal trees are spread over 372 acres of land in Delhi's Akhara. Narayana Goswami then began sadhana by sitting under the tree form of the demon chief. Narayana Goswami's Sadhana place 'Sadhanabri' is currently fenced off. Bhoga is offered here every new moon and full moon night. Every year 8 Chaitra fairs are also organized here.

How to go

If you want to go to Kishoreganj by train from Dhaka, first you have to come to Kishoreganj district headquarters. You can come to Kishoreganj by bus or train from Dhaka. It will be more convenient if you go by train at 11am in the morning. 120-200 will be paid according to the train fare class, it will take about 4 hours and 20 minutes. You can go from the train station to Ekrampur CNG stand 15 for 20 taka rickshaw fare.

How to go from Dhaka to Kishoreganj by bus

If you want to go by bus from Mohakhali, you can go directly to Kishoreganj by Ananya Transport or Ananya Classic and if you want to go from Golapbagh (Syedabad), you can go directly to Kishoreganj by Yatayat or Ananya Super. Bus fare will be 200 to 250 taka. It will take about 3 and a half hours from Mohakhali and about 4 hours from Golapbagh. You can go to Ekrampur CNG stand by local (15 taka) or reserve easy bike (120 taka) from the bus stand.

From Ekrampur, take a CNG or auto rickshaw to Chamta Port (local name is Khadya Ghat). Trawlers and boats are available for taking local and reserve from the port.

Similarly, from Ekrampur junction in Kishoreganj city, you can come to Balikhola or Morichkhali market and take a trawler or reserve a boat to visit Delhi's arena. Although there is a possibility to go to Delhi Akhara from these three places, Kadhya Bandar, Balikhola, Morichkhali, it will be most convenient to go to Delhi Akhara from Chamta Bandar.

It is good to remember that during the dry season, the water in the Haor and the river is low due to which the normal communication system of the Haor is disrupted.

There is not a very good accommodation system in Mithamain Upazila. If you want to stay then you can stay in Dak Bungalow of Upazila Parishad. There are also Shikdar Hotel and Sohail Guest House accommodation in Mithamain Bazar area. If you want to stay somewhere better, you can stay in Kishoreganj headquarters. There are several good quality residential hotels like River View, Gangchil, Ujanvati, Nirala, Castle Salam. Also, subject to permission, you can stay in the government post bungalow of the district headquarter if you wish.

where to eat

You can try the local food of the market at the hotel. There you can find different flavors of Haor fish. Meals in Mithamin Hotels are usually served with freshly cooked fresh fish.
