Oil prices fell below zero!

The Dhaka Times Desk তেলের দাম নেমে গেছে একেবারে শূন্যের নিচে। সোমবার শূন্যের নিচে তেলের দাম থাকার বিষয়টি ছিল “উদ্ভট”, বলছেন জনৈক বাজার বিশেষজ্ঞ।

বিশ্লেষকরা বলছেন যে, একদিকে বাজারে তেলের অতি সরবরাহ ও অপরদিকে করোনা ভাইরাস সংক্রমণের কারণে চাহিদায় ব্যাপক ধস – এই দুই কারণের সমন্বয়ই তেলের দাম এতোটা কমে যাবার মূল কারণ।

Due to the global corona virus lockdown that has been implemented by various countries, the economic activities have decreased completely. Traffic is drastically reduced, people are staying at home and global demand is almost zero.

The price of American oil yesterday stood at minus 37 dollars per barrel! But now again this price is rising above zero.

Oil prices have also fallen in the UK. But British oil, known in the market as Brent crude, currently costs around $23 a barrel.

ফিডেলিটি ইন্টারন্যাশানাল নামে একটি সংস্থার বিশ্লেষক জেমস ট্র্যাফোর্ড বলেছেন, “কাল বাজারে তেলের দামের এই নজিরবিহীন পতনকে উদ্ভট বলেই আমাদের দেখতে হবে। বুঝতে হবে যে ভবিষ্যতে বাজারে এমন আশ্চর্য কাণ্ডও ঘটতে পারে।”

He believes that this unprecedented drop in prices confirms that the oil market will remain very weak in the near term.

“তবে এটা বাজারের ভয়ংকর একটা উথালপাতাল পরিস্থিতির কোনো সূচক নয়,” তিনি তাই বলছেন। “তেলের দাম শূণ্যের নিচে চলে যাওয়াটাকে আগামীতে বাজারের নতুন একটা স্বাভাবিক সূচক হিসাবে আমরা কখনও দেখছি না।”

What is going to happen?

The point is that the price of oil in the market is actually an advance assessment of the price of oil in the market. The price of oil in the next few months is determined based on the contracts entered into based on future demand.

Does this mean oil prices will fall further?

“তেলের দাম ও এই খাতের বাজার আগামী কয়েক মাসই খুবই দুর্বল থাকবে,” জেমস ট্র্যাফোর্ডের পূর্বাভাস।

He said OPEC's goal of reducing oil supply would not bring the market into balance any time soon.

OPEC also wants to stop oil production immediately. They think that the collapse in prices will not be fixed until next month.

What will reduce the price of petrol?

Although the price of petrol is related to the wholesale price of oil, the price of petrol fluctuates due to competition. This means that the price that motorists pay for petrol is not directly linked to the price of crude oil. Instead, suppliers decide at what price they will sell petrol.

So you will not see the impact of the recent upheaval in the oil market at the petrol pump. In many cases, the price of petrol depends on the amount of tax that the government of that country levies on the oil.

A fall in wholesale oil prices may have an impact on oil prices. But now as the economic activities are very less, people are driving less cars, using petrol or diesel very less. That's why experts say it's highly unlikely that petrol prices will fall as a result. Source: BBC
