The United Nations World Food Organization (WFP) has warned that the world is headed for a hunger epidemic this year. The reason is that the number of hungry people will double in 2020 compared to other years.
According to the organization's calculations, by the end of 2019, 13.5 million people in the world were in dire food crisis. Since many countries are closing down factories and people are complying with mandatory quarantine, this year the number of hungry people will increase to 265 million.
The organization also said that there are 5 countries in the world with the highest food risk. Among them, Yemen is on the first place. The country is already in the grip of famine due to the war that started in 2015. A deadly corona epidemic has appeared on it. Health workers also fear that Corona may spread widely in the country due to the inadequate health system. Currently, the number of hungry people in the country is about 12 million. That is why food aid is urgently needed for the country.
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is second most at risk of famine. According to WFP, the country, which has been in a civil war for a third of a long century, is the world's second largest famine-stricken country. The country's 30 million people depend only on food aid because of the war.
The BBC reported in a report, on the other hand, Venezuela is in the third place in terms of food risk. Due to the economic crisis, the world's oil-rich country is facing a deadly food crisis. That's why a third of people are now in dire need of food aid. South Sudan is fourth in food risk and Afghanistan is fifth.
