China's Minister of Science and Technology Zhang Xinmin also said that the clinical trial of the drug called favipiravir, made by a subsidiary of Japan's Fujifilm Holdings Corporation, has yielded effective results.

Like China, Japan is using favipiravir to treat patients with mild to moderate symptoms of the coronavirus. However, Japanese health ministry sources say the drug has not been shown to be very effective in treating patients with severe symptoms. The same results were observed when using a combination of the HIV drugs lopinavir and ritonavir.

Recently, the drug has also been administered to at least 340 corona patients in Wuhan and Shenzhen regions. "It is very safe and has been completely effective in treatment," Shinmin said of its results.

Japan's state media NHK reported that patients in the Shenzhen region who were given favipiravir became free of the virus in just 4 days. On the other hand, other drug users took about 11 days to recover.
