There has been a lot of anger among the civil society, conscious circles and local residents. The work of demolishing the structure in Gouripur Government College is being carried out for the last one week.

However, this structure is being demolished on the pretext of building construction. Which is a very sad thing.
It is known that Gouripur Government College started its journey on August 1, 1964 at the house of landlord Surendra Prasad Lahiri in Krishnapur area of Gouripur town. This beautiful college is built on 22 acres of land. This traditional school has gradually become a tourist attraction due to its ancient monuments, spacious picturesque campus and natural environment.
This college was officialized in 1991. Honors course was introduced in the college in 2012. In this situation, due to the increase in the number of teachers and students, there is a building crisis. Recently the work of demolishing an ancient structure to construct a building in the college also started. Since last Wednesday, when the picture of the demolition of the structure spread on Facebook, there is a storm of criticism. People from various professions have raised questions about why the old structures are being demolished and the building is being constructed even after there is an alternative place in the college.
On the ground floor, the demolition of the ancient structure next to the principal's building of the college is in progress. The roof of the one-storied structure has already been demolished. The workers associated with the construction work also said that the remaining part will be demolished in stages.
Joint General Secretary of Gouripur Upazila Awami League Iqbal Hossain Jewel said, 'A lot of Gouripur Government College's own land is lying vacant for the construction of multiple buildings. Our demand is that buildings should be constructed on those empty lands. Apart from this, the historical monument should be renovated in a beautiful manner while keeping its infrastructure intact.'
Raic Uddin, general secretary of Human Rights Commission Gouripur branch, said that due to lack of maintenance, unplanned renovation and construction work, the ancient monuments of the college are being destroyed. A few years ago, in the name of renovation, part of the upper part of the old building was demolished at the entrance of the college. It was not repaired later. Now another ancient structure is being demolished. If this continues, the ancient monuments of the college will no longer exist.
Professor Milton Bhattacharya, Acting Principal of Gouripur Government College, said that there is no chance of renovating and preserving the old building as its infrastructure is weak and vulnerable. The building was abandoned for a long time. So it is being demolished in the tender process following the proper norms for construction of the building. However, all the ancient monuments that the college has the opportunity to renovate are being preserved.
