A pair of Mahatma Gandhi's glasses sold at auction for more than 2.5 crore rupees (260,000 pounds). An American collector bought a pair of glasses in a 6-minute telephone auction on Friday.

Auctioneer Andrew Stowe said it was a record for East Bristol Auction House. News from BBC Bengal.

It was estimated that this pair of glasses could sell for a maximum of 15,000 pounds (over Rs. 15 lakhs). But he never thought that the price would be so high.

Andrew Stowe says that the owner of Gandhi's glasses was an elderly man from Mangosfield in Britain. The pair of glasses had been lying in a drawer in his house for more than 50 years. He found the pair of glasses while cleaning the house during the lockdown.

The pair of glasses have been in the family for generations, ever since a relative met Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi in South Africa in the 1920s.

Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was famous for giving away his belongings. After finding the pair of glasses, the owner gave them to Andrew Stowe Auctioneers for auction.

Because he wanted the pair of glasses to be bought by someone who would understand their historical value. But he did not imagine that its price could rise so much.

Andrew Stowe said, 'It's an unexpected event. This pair of glasses not only set sales records for us, but also highlighted its international historical significance.

It could easily have been stolen, broken or even ended up in the rubbish bin.'

In the store's words, 'This pair of glasses had been sitting in a drawer for over fifty years. Its owner told me, if it can't be sold, it should be thrown away. Now he is getting life changing money too.'

The pair of glasses, tucked inside a white envelope, had been in the East Bristol auction house's letterbox since Friday night. The envelope was opened on Saturday morning.

The owner had no idea of its price and when he was told it could be worth £15,000, he 'almost had a heart attack'. The seller of the pair of glasses said that he will share the money from the auction with the girl.
