It is initially believed that the blast may have been caused by an attack. Ali Ghanem, the country's Minister of Petroleum and Mineral Resources, said this in an interview on Syrian state television yesterday (Monday).
According to various Syrian media reports, a large fire also occurred after the explosion. Al Arabiya reported that the explosion occurred near the cities of Ad Dumayr and Adra, northwest of the country's capital, Damascus.
Following this incident, Ali Ghanem said, our special team was sent there after the explosion. The evidence they found showed that such an incident was caused by a terrorist attack.
Al Arabiya reports that Syria's Minister of Petroleum and Minerals referred to the incident as an attack, but did not say exactly how the attack was organized. Moreover, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
Soon after the explosion, the power supply in the area was cut off. The electricity supply there is gradually being restored, said the Syrian Minister of Electricity.
Al Arabiya says in its news that the explosion happened in the Arab gas pipeline. It is an international pipeline that runs from Egypt through Syria into Jordan.
