The Dhaka Times Desk Senate elections were held in Egypt last week. However, 54 million voters of the country did not vote in that election. 5 million voters will be summoned to court for not voting!
The issue has also made the Election Commission of Egypt think. Steps have been taken to investigate the incident. It was decided that those who did not vote will be brought before the public prosecutor's court.
'When I was reading the news in the newspaper, I couldn't believe my eyes. For a while it seemed like a fake or a hoax. I am really surprised to hear the statement of Election Commission chief. He was explaining the legal basis for taking action against voters.' Said, a voter.
It is known that Egypt passed a law in 2014. Failure to vote on that law provides for a 500 Egyptian pound fine. 5.4 million voters did not participate in the recently concluded elections. Which is half of the total population of the country. And 85 percent of total voters. If the fine is really collected from everyone, then the amount of money earned by the state will be 2 thousand 105 million Egyptian pounds!
The senate is of no particular importance in Egypt. It is basically just a decorative committee. It also has no role in decision-making in national politics. Egypt's constitution was recently amended. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is in power until 2030. The amendment also outlines how the Senate will be constituted. The constitution of the Senate is fixed in such a way that no one can challenge the power of the President. Analysts call it absurd.
There are 300 seats in the Egyptian Senate. 100 people were nominated by President Al Sisi himself. Another 100 people were selected in the closed list system. The remaining 100 were elected by public vote through competition.
Those who participated in the direct vote were candidates from Sisi's The Nation's Future and its coalition partners. Candidates nominated by the CC and their coalition partners contest directly in the elections. That is, the winners are also followers of CC.
If 85 percent of the voters do not participate in the electoral process of democracy, then all the parties should accept the ultimate defeat. The reason is that the candidates have completely failed to gain the confidence of the voters. There is now a huge gap between democracy and reality. Currently, Egypt is facing a lack of democracy under the Sisi government.
85 percent of the voters did not exercise their right to vote? Why did the politicians fail to gain the trust of the voters? There is no discussion about these in the country. Rather, various reports are being printed in the pro-government media about how fines will be collected from those who did not vote. A talk show is being broadcast on television. The discussion is about the formula of how the 5.5 crore voters will be brought under the jurisdiction of the Public Prosecutor Headquarters.
Legal experts have given several suggestions to recover the fine from the accused.
1. Application time for National Identity Card.
2. When applying for driving license.
3. When someone pays the fine, the information should also be sent to the rest. Failure to do so will result in deduction of penalty from the employee's salary.
The government has already launched a campaign. Where it is said that the Public Prosecution Office has asked 5.5 crore voters to appear.
Note that in 2014, Egypt added a new clause called Article 65 to their constitution. Where it is said that every person can freely express his opinion. However, the current Egyptian government does not recognize it at all. There is no freedom of expression in the country.
Local politicians say freedom of speech or expression is what Sisi wants and promotes his plans. It is a crime to say anything against his will.
