That is why mitochondria are called the 'powerhouse of the cell'. Only when oxygen is consumed is it converted into energy. An animal that has no place to make that energy in its body does not even need oxygen.
Researchers are still not sure how this parasite evolved. Their guess is that maybe this parasite collects the necessary energy from the fish's body. However, anaerobic or anaerobic bacteria also survive without oxygen. So what is the difference between Henguera and all those bacteria? Professor Dorothy explains, 'The way different organisms live in water, it is possible to produce energy without consuming oxygen. But Henegua's physical structure is not like this at all.
